Call Vonage lucky or good, but it has managed to come up with an app that has passed through Apple’s app approval process. Vonage had been counting on the iPhone platform as another way to expand its horizons and grow its business. It would have been devastating for the company to have its app rejected by iPhone. And for a good reason. Vonage’s shares rose by as much as 36 percent in response to the app’s approval.
Vonage has had its success in the VOIP market. But cable companies have put enormous pressure on the company with their bundles. So it’s no surprise to see Vonage losing a significant number of customers to those giants. The iPhone platform gives Vonage a chance to offset its losses and move its business to the next level. We still don’t know what the app does. Since the app was approved by Apple without a hitch, I am skeptical about the nature of the app. Moreover, Vonage won’t disclose any information as long as its working on the app. So it could be a while before we find out more about what this app does.
Vonage may have won the battle by getting its app approved by Apple, but the war is yet to begin. Will Vonage be “saved” by its iPhone app? That’s something we will have to wait and see.
