As the iOS platform grows, more hackers and thieves will take their chances to target iOS devices. It is not a surprise to see companies such as McAfee come up with security solutions for iPhone. This market has the potential to be very lucrative as more people adopt mobile devices. McAfee WaveSecure is developed to help iPhone owners protect themselves against data loss and theft. It allows users to remotely lock and wipe their phone and backup their photos and contacts on their device.
Todd Gebhart, co-president at McAfee had this to say about this new product:
Consumers use their mobile devices to hold some of the most important details of their life. McAfee WaveSecure software works seamlessly to secure, back up and wirelessly restore content on the device via the online portal. So even if the device is lost, stolen or damaged, or even if users accidentally delete their data, the data remains safe and easily accessible
With WaveSecure, iPhone users can create backups of their data through an online portal. The contacts can be restored using another smart-phone, even one that runs Android. WaveSecure is currently available for $19.99 in the App Store.
We are not quite clear how the remote locking and backup features in WaveSecure are revolutionary. Apple already has a free application that makes it possible for iPhone owners to track, lock, and remotely wipe their data on their phones. iTunes already creates backup of your data (thing will get even better with iCloud), so McAfee’s offering does seem a bit expensive for what it is. McAfee needs to do a whole lot more to make WaveSecure something worth paying for.
