In the past few weeks, we have covered various iPhone 5 rumors. Some of these rumors suggest iPhone 5 to be only a couple of months away from being released to the market. Then there are some that hint at Apple having problems getting the device ready for a June release. The latest set of rumors suggest that Apple may have to delay iPhone 5 until at least fall 2011.
Apparently, a key supplier has claimed that Apple won’t begin iPhone production until September. Apple Insider had the story:
Avian Securities issued a note to investors on Monday in which it revealed the alleged plans for a September production start… Avian also claimed in its note that it has heard that Apple has a lower-priced iPhone with less expensive internal components in the company’s roadmap. However, the handset is currently a “placeholder,” and specific components and production timing remain unknown.
Multiple sources have suggested that Apple has been taking its time to pick suppliers for iPhone. Many experts did expect the recent tragic events in Japan to affect Apple’s production badly. But is it that bad for Apple to push its plans a few months?
Apple has been quite aggressive when it comes to pricing the iPad. Most Apple competitors in the tablet market have had problems matching or bettering iPad’s pricing strategy. A cheaper iPhone (even with less features) could give Apple the boost it needs to reach more homes. According to Gartner, Apple will continue to dominate the tablet market for the foreseeable future. There is no reason it can’t continue to do the same in the smart-phone market:
Due to the success of Apples iPad, iOS will account for 69 percent of media tablet OSs in 2011, and represent 47 percent of the media tablet market in 2015..Many, however, are making the same mistake that was made in the first response wave to the iPhone, as they are prioritizing hardware features over applications
Apple has a growing app platform. That will continue to be a huge advantage for the company. Even if iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are delayed, Apple’s sales are expected to stay quite strong. Let’s hope Apple goes all out to add some major upgrades to iPhone.
