Apple has already had a lot of success with iPhone 4. It has not only sold a ton of these phones through AT&T, it has brought it to Verizon (w/ CDMA technology) to step up its game against Android and other top competitors in this business. For years, Apple has been known for making premium products and having the highest profit margins in the tech world. That could be about to change with latest rumors pointing to the company working on a cheaper, more compact iPhone.
According to WSJ, Apple not only plans to introduce a cheap iPhone nano, it will overhaul its MobileMe service by turning it into a free service for photo, video, and music storage:
The new phoneone of its code names is N97would be available to carriers at about half the price of the main iPhones. That would allow carriers to subsidize most or all of the retail price, putting the iPhone in the same mass-market price range as rival smartphones, the person said.
A free MobileMe would be a huge step for Apple towards creating a killer social networking service. Apple has been working on a new online music service, which could partially explain this move. Considering that Apple iPhones are getting more powerful cameras with every new iteration, allowing people to store their photos/videos in the cloud would be a smart idea.
While we await iPhone 5 and iPhone nano, it will be interesting to see how successful Verizon iPhone has been in its first couple of weeks. Many news outlets have pointed to small lines in front of Verizon stores as a sign that Verizon iPhone has fallen flat. That is not the whole story as Verizon sold out iPhone shortly after it went on sale online. Since Verizon iPhone 4 is not a whole new device, it is not a surprise that people are not camping out in front of Verizon stores hours and days ahead of time. Some are probably waiting for iPhone 5, which is probably the best move at this point.
Did you pick up Verizon iPhone 4 or will you wait for iPhone 5?
