The year 2011 has been a mixed year for Apple fans. Apple did not release the iPad 3 or iPhone 5 this year. But it has managed to still sell a ton of new iPhones and iPads and continues to be dominant in the markets it is involved in. It is true that Android continues its steady growth. But a recent report by ComScore suggests that Apple has increased its share of mobile subscribers in November. The survey shows Apple growing its share to 11.2% (up by 1.4%) in November 2011. The biggest victim here seems to be RIM as it is losing ground quickly.
The iOS platform may be running behind against Android in marketshare. But It is quite a lucrative platform for developers and businesses. Many iPhone or iPad users now feel more comfortable shopping online on their device. IBM’s latest holiday benchmark has found that iOS devices were responsible for 13.4% of all online purchases on Christmas. The iPad led the way with 7% of the share.
We recently reported how lucrative the iOS platform has become for developers. It is no wonder that we see most developers focusing their efforts on making it big in the App Store. iOS device owners download a ton of free and paid apps every month. A new study from mobile ad firm Fiksu suggests the number of downloads of the top 200 free iPhone apps reached 5.65m per day for the month of November (in the U.S.). The data indicates that the introduction of the iPhone 4S has certainly helped the App Store’s numbers here. The number of downloads for all free apps is probably a whole lot higher though.
