iPhone 5 is not out yet but people are already discussing what iPhone 6 will or won’t offer. Apple may be a dominant force in the mobile industry but it needs to innovate to stay ahead of its rivals such as Samsung. By all accounts, iPhone 5 will most likely make its debut in September with a better processor, slightly larger screen, and better cameras. Apple is not stopping there. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is looking for ways to revamp iPhone to take the device to the next level. That includes introducing a new way of charging it.
The idea of induction charging is nothing new. Powermat already has accessories for smart-phone owners who want to charge their devices wirelessly. Palm Pre also had a wireless charger (see video above). Apple is expected to use Near field magnetic resonance (NFMR) to allow iPhone owners to charge their devices from a distance. WiTricity has been working on such technology for a few years now.
Apple’s “Wireless power utilization in a local computing environment” does suggest that the company has grand plans for its smart-phone. In this application, Apple discusses how an iMac could be used to provide a virtual charging area for mice, keyboards, and mobile devices.
Implementing such technology by the time the next iPhone comes out won’t be easy. But if Apple succeeds in this, we don’t ever have to plug iPhones into outlets or computers again (thanks to wireless sync). That is something to be excited about.
