Anybody who has paid attention to what is going on in this country knows we are not out of the woods just yet. The economy is in a very fragile position, forcing many consumers to think more about saving and prioritizing how they spend their money. People may be buying iPhone 4 like hot-cakes but the older generation Apple devices are in demand too. The bad economy seems to have helped Apple sell even more older iOS devices.
As a study by Canaccord Genuity indicates, people love getting their hands on slightly older Apple products for much lower prices:
Interestingly, our April checks indicated continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS at AT&T and iPad 1 at Verizon, as these older generation products with reduced prices often outsold new Android products,We believe this highlights Apple’s significant competitive advantage, and these older products help Apple offer a tiered pricing strategy at key channels,
said analyst Michael Walkley. Android may have grown fast as a platform but it surely is not encouraging for Android fans to see new Android phones such as HTC Inspire and Motorola Atrix get outsold by iPhone 3GS. There are a ton of handsets available for Android but none come close to challenging iPhone individually.
The economy may be in a sad state but according to research firm iSuppli, Apple iPhone is selling like hotcakes. Apparently, iPhone sales grew by 15% in the first quarter of 2011. That is mainly due to the emergence of Verizon iPhone though:
Not only did this allow Apple to expand its target market and boost shipments, it also placed additional pressure on rival smart phone brands–including Motorola, Samsung, LG and HTC–that focus on Verizon Wireless as a major customer
Apple has built a very powerful ecosystem around iOS. Regardless of what Google comes up with, iOS-based phones will remain popular for the foreseeable future (even the old models).
