A few days ago, one of our team members made the prediction that Apple was going to release a larger iPad. Apple did not change the name of the iPad to “iPad Air” by accident. An iPad Pro with a 11 to 13 inch display won’t sell as well as smaller iPads but could be more attractive to some professionals. PadNews is now suggesting that a 12.9 inch iPad is being tested at Foxconn. We are not sure whether it will be called “iPad Maxi” though.
The iPad Pro, as we like to call it, will probably have a 11-12 inch display. According to PadNews, it will make it debut in March of 2014. That seems too soon. Considering that Samsung is also thinking about releasing larger tablets, Apple may be forced to compete in that part of the market. This is just a rumor anyway. To be frank, iWatch and iGlass are more fun to think about.
Speaking of the iPad Air, Apple is making them for cheaper this time around. Research firm IHS is reporting that the iPad Air is costing between $274 and $361 to build. The device sells for as high as $929 (depending on the model you pick up). So Apple is making a huge amount of profit per sale. The display may be more costly but Apple is saving money on other parts. It will be interesting to see the costs for the iPad Mini 2 considering that Apple will sell millions of those too.
