Platforms such as Android may have managed to gather a significant following among mobile users. But there is no single phone that has managed to kill the iPhone. In fact, the iPhone is in a stronger position than ever, even though Apple did not release the iPhone 5 last year. According to the latest report by IDC, Apple has climbed back into the leading position in the smartphone business. Thanks to the iPhone 4S, Apple has managed to set a new shipment volume record for the entire industry in the last quarter.
Apple does not have the market all to itself though. Samsung is challenging the company valiantly in the global markets. In fact, the company finished 2011 with a huge growth in comparison to the previous year. Nokia, Research In Motion, and HTC are all losing momentum as this race tightens at the top. Samsung and Apple are expected to continue pushing each other in 2012 and beyond.
Apple’s strategy has always been ingenious. The company wouldn’t mind leading the global markets. While it holds only around 9% of the global mobile phone market, it is raking in 75% of all profits (in comparison to Samsung’s 16% share). This easily explains while Apple is one of the most valuable companies around these days.
