Just a couple of days ago, we ran a story on how you can use BlackRa1n to jailbreak your iPhone and get more out of it than you would under Apple restrictions. It’s no secret that Apple and AT&T are not exactly fan of the jailbreak community. If you are trying to tightly control a platform, you certainly don’t want your customers to find a way to get around your restrictions. Apple seems to be have figured out (for now) how to keep people from jail-breaking their phones by making modification to the underlying software that you get with new iPhone 3GS units.
The Dev Team has released a new jailbreak software for iPhone 3GS. What it does do is allow you to continue enjoying your unlocked iPhone 3GS. What it doesn’t do is unlock iPhone 3.1.2:
This release allows your baseband to remain unlocked at 3.1.2, but it does not unlock a new baseband put there by restoring to official 3.1.x. It is super important that people who need the unlock to understand they can keep it only by starting at 3.0 (or earlier) and updating solely to custom IPSWs that don’t update the baseband.
As you can tell, things could get a bit complicated if you want to unlock the latest iPhones. But nothing’s impossible. Jailbreaking has never really been for the faint of heart. There are a lot of issues that could pop up during the process, and there is no way to guarantee your phone continues to work with the custom firmware, especially as Apple tries to clamp down on jailbreakers.
Apple can certainly make it more difficult for jailbreakers to go about doing their job. But at the same time, no software is hack proof, so you can expect these third party services to continue providing jailbreak software for the time being. You just want to make sure you don’t jump into all this without knowing the risks.
