Unless something extraordinary happens today, Apple is going to announce its long awaited tablet product at its event in San Francisco. Apple may have kept the details on this device secret, but details are already leaking out in forms of hints here or there. One of the hints that we have gotten is that Apple may be relying on AT&T to provide wireless service for these tablets (similar to what Amazon is doing with Kindle). Of course, there are other ways to interpret Apple defending AT&T in the eve of its biggest event since the iPhone 1G announcement event.
Tim Cook certainly didn’t pull any stops in defending AT&T’s service:
I think it is important to remember that they have more mobile broadband usage than any other carrier in the world. In the vast majority of locations, we think that iPhone customers are having a great experience from the research that we have done.
Of course, Tim could be just tricking us here and making us believe that AT&T will be part of Apple’s future plans when the company is planning otherwise. But so far there is no reason to believe AT&T won’t be part of Apple’s plans for its tablet. Apple always keep its lips tight when it comes to new products, but this time around we have seen publishers struggling to contain their glee. McGraw Hill’s CEO may have already let the cat out of the bag on CNBC:
There are a lot of features that we would like to see on Apple tablet, but there are so many of them that Apple will give us with a first generation tablet. So if you are expecting a solar tablet or other fancy features in this tablet, you are mistaken. The price seems to be the main point of focus for those interested in picking up this gadget. We have heard that the price could be anywhere in $700-$1000 range. Even at $700, the tablet is going to be a bit pricey for most people. So it’d be interesting how will Apple go about pricing this device. We won’t have to wait too long to figure that out.
