The issue of fragmentation is a huge one for Android. It may not sound so serious on paper these days. But it is still challenging to deal with for developers and the Android community. Apple does not quite have that issue. It is rare to see people running very old versions of iOS on their devices. If you happen to be running iOS 3.1.3 on your iPhone or iPod Touch, the time to upgrade has come. It seems Apple has disabled the ability for devices running that version of iOS to download apps from the App Store.
Apple has not announced officially that it was going to stop iOS 3.1.3 devices from getting new apps directly. Nevertheless, the issue is widely discussed in Apple’s forums. Those of you who are still using this version can still update the apps you have already bought and transfer software from iTunes.
Speaking of fragmentation, Apple does seem serious about taking its chance in the TV industry. The future of Apple TV is quite unclear. Many experts are not sure whether we will see a new Apple TV box anytime soon. As the The Wall Street Journal has reported, Apple executives have been meeting and speaking with top media companies to discuss the company’s vision for the future of TV.
Rumors suggest iHDTV will offer television programs, movies and other content wirelessly. With the rise of Siri, most industry experts believe the technology will be integrated in iHDTV. Whether Apple will make its own HDTVs or bring the iOS to select HDTV models is not quite clear at this point.
