iOS 7 is going to be here soon. Developers will get a chance to play around with it for now. But the software will be released this fall. It won’t be compatible with every iOS device though. Apple has published the list of products that you will be able to install iOS 7 on:
As you can tell, iPhone 3GS, older iPods, and iPad 1 won’t be getting the update. That is still not as bad as we thought, though if you are buying an iPad, you should probably consider getting an iPad 3 or later just to be on the safe side when iOS 8 is released. Apple will soon have a couple of more products to add to this list.
Speaking of iOS 7, many folks seem to be excited about the new 3D effect that Apple has added to the platform. It gives users the impression that app icons are floating in the background. You can now add that effect to your iPhone even if you don’t have iOS 7. You will need to jailbreak your device to take advantage of this.
To be fair, the effect doesn’t look as good as what we saw at Apple’s event. But if you can’t upgrade to iOS 7 or don’t want to, then this may be an option worth exploring.
