It seems every Tuesday Amazon comes up with a new way to surprise its rivals in the industries it is involved in. This time around Amazon seems to have changed the game in the music industry by offering a cloud-based service, Cloud Drive. It is an exciting service that allows music lovers to upload their music library, including songs bought from iTunes, to their digital locker. No longer do music fans have to bother moving their files from one computer to another to listen to them or make backups.
Those who take advantage of Cloud Drive can listen to their music using Cloud Player. Cloud Player has two versions: web and Android. As expected, Amazon does not want to bother dealing with Apple, especially after all the issues it has had keeping its Kindle app in the app store. Users get 5 GB of free storage right from the start. Uploading and listening to music on Cloud Drive is like doing anything else on Amazon: very simple.
It is no secret that Google and Apple are also planning their cloud-based music services. Amazon’s formidable cloud streaming service will push both companies to go all out to be competitive. Unfortunately, the possibility of Cloud Player coming to iOS is remote at best.
These types of digital lockers are not without their issues. Even though Amazon is not encouraging people to pirate music, there is a good chance some folks will store pirated music on Amazon’s servers. Cloud Drive is just like any other external hard drive so Amazon should be in the clear. But we all know a major lawsuit can always change things.
