A lot of people want to believe that everything that Apple touches is somehow more secure than anything other companies are making. But in reality, every piece of software, no matter who the developer, can have flaws and security vulnerabilities. Apple iPhone OS is no different. It’s certainly more secure than some of the other pieces of software available on the market, but it has its flaws as well. Take the SMS issue for example. The issue of SMS attack was discovered a while ago, and it’s one that needs to be taken seriously. At first, the SMS could be used to crash an iPhone. But you can actually use an SMS attack to take over an iPhone.
The good news is Apple is probably working to solve this issue soon. The bad news is the folks at Black Hat conference will try to show you how it can be done. So a lot of more people can learn how to hack an iPhone after this conference. Charlie Miller, a top iPhone hacker, has put it best:
SMS is an incredible attack vector for mobile phones… All I need is your phone number. I don’t need you to click a link or anything.
The hacking industry (if you can call it that) is never going to stop finding holes in software packages introduced to the market. And as much as you want to believe that your phone is running a 100% foolproof software, it is not. But thanks to all these ethical hackers, we can at least know about these holes in advance.
