AT&T to sell Unlocked iPhones?

Remember how we were supposed to get unlocked iPhones from at&T last year? We all heard how Apple and at&t were finally ready to offer unlocked iPhone 3Gs to their customers, but at&t didn’t really go with it, until now. at&t is planning to sell as many iPhones as possible to get ready for the new products that we will see this summer. We still don’t have too much information on the hardware changes that Apple is planning for the iPhone and iPod Touch, but many experts are claiming that some will be there.

While it’s nice to be able to buy an unlocked phone, I am not clear whether people are ready to pay $599/$699 to get their hands on these phones. And considering that you won’t have too many options for your next iPhone carrier, you may be better off sticking with your locked iPhone. There will be demand for unlocked iPhones, and that’ what at&t is hoping for. What is not clear is whether at&t will offer the new iPhone without a contract as well. Let’s hope at&t doesn’t pull a fast one on us by locking the new iPhones.
