The days of iPhone getting special treatment from AT&T seem to be coming to an end. When it comes to AT&T’s insurance plan for phones, that is a good thing. At first, AT&T decided not to offer an insurance plan for iPhone. That was a bit discouraging for iPhone fans, which led to the company offering a more expensive insurance plan just for iPhone. Starting July 17th, iPhone will get the same insurance plan that other phones have had under AT&T.
Effective July 17, 2011, the Apple iPhone (all models) will be eligible for coverage with the AT&T Mobile Insurance program (formerly Wireless Phone Insurance). …Enrollment restrictions apply. Customers can only enroll within 30 days of a new activation or upgrade, prior activations or upgrades outside of 30 days are not eligible.
AT&T’s Mobile Insurance Program will cost $4.99 a month. It will cover lost, stolen, and accidentally damaged iPhone units. Just like any other insurance program, there are limits and restrictions to this program to keep people from abusing the program. Verizon does have an insurance plan for iPhones too. It is a much more expensive plan ($10.99 a month).
Should you buy insurance for your iPhone? The jury is still out on that. Apple does have an iPhone repair program which costs $199. That does not cover accidents or theft though. The AT&T’s insurance program does seem like a heck of deal.
