Apple has not had a decent past couple of months. That goes without saying. Being sued over iPad overheating is not going to be the last thing that the company will need to worry about. Most gadget owners know that leaving their devices such as tablets or laptops in direct sunshine is not recommended. Some follow their manufacturers’ recommendations. Others decide to sue them. A suit filed on July 23rd in California seeks class action status and unspecified damages over iPad heating up under normal weather conditions.
We have known about some of these iPad issues for some time now. It is just not clear whether Apple can do anything about this particular situation. This is not something you can fix with a case or a piece of plastic (unlike iPhone 4). Computers and other gadgets heat up all the time. We don’t see consumers sue every computer manufacturer for these issues.
Apple is quickly learning that positioning itself as having almost “flawless” devices has its disadvantages too. Some people who have never had any experience with Apple products are picking up their first Apple gadgets with very high expectations. How else can you explain people seeking “class action lawsuits” for every little problem.
While iPad overheating is a problem, it’s not something Apple is going to hold a press conference over (or issue a recall). Everybody knows that tiny tablets such as iPad need to stay cool to operate at the highest level. Leaving them in direct sun-shine (in warm areas) is something most iPad owners won’t do. In a perfect world, Apple would come up with a solution for this problem. It is just not clear what Apple can do here.
