As more consumers pick up devices such as iPhone and iPad, it is only a matter of time before more hackers target devices that run iOS on them. Mobile malware is nothing new and is here to stay. According to many experts, iPhone’s security is lacking in many areas. Android does have its own security issues. Apple is planning to do something about it by hiring security expert David Rice as its security czar. Mr. Rice, the author of Geekonomics, has been critical of how large companies approach security their software:
Companies like Oracle or Microsoft say their software is unbreakable or trustworthy. But those statements are vacuous and cheap to make, and theres no consequences for when theyre wrong… When youre buying Oracles or Apples software theres no notion of what youre getting into. Some say Apple is more secure than Microsoft. Thats a totally subjective statement, theres no objective measurement going onthe risk is invisible. So the market really cant choose to buy more secure software.
David Rice could potentially help devices such as iPhone to become more secure for enterprise. But it is highly doubtful that Apple could keep all iOS hackers at bay. Partnerships with companies such as Unisys could further help Apple’s cause.
Apple has been going after jailbreakers for quite some time. These hackers have managed to stay ahead of Apple so far. Apple is making life difficult for these folks. It is also aiming to keep people from messing with their phones by changing iPhone 4’s screws. Perfection does not exist in the security world. It is nice to know that Apple is taking some action to keep its platform more secure.
