You know iPad is close when Apple starts increasing 3G download cap for its iPhone. In a move that surprised very few, Apple has increased download cap from 10 MB to 20 MB over 3G network. That means you are going to be able to download fairly larger apps and files without having to look for a WiFi network. Considering that iPad owners are expected to download a lot of stuff over 3G, it’s not a surprise that Apple has made this decision.
What we are wondering at this point is whether AT&T can handle all the load that the iPad will put on its network. It’s true that the company has been investing in its infrastructure to get ready for the next way of super-phones and super-gadgets, but let’s not forget that AT&T was complaining about high load that iPhone puts on its network. Adding iPad and Android devices to the fold only means things are going to get more challenging for AT&T. Of course, it’s possible that Apple put these restrictions in at the request of wireless carriers such as AT&T. So maybe AT&T is doing something right.
The iPad is not even ready to be pre-ordered. There are some legal and technical issues that Apple needs to address before getting the green light to start selling the iPad in the U.S. The company hasn’t even bothered to acquire iPad.com at this point. But the latest move by Apple could be an indication that the company may be close to clearing the final hurdles towards releasing its new gadget.
Should Apple put these restrictions on its devices? What does AT&T’s unlimited plan stand for anyway? I don’t believe you can blame everything on AT&T as it’s not known whether other carriers can handle the iPhone and all its baggage any better. Let’s hope the iPad doesn’t bring the whole network to a halt.
