Is the antennagate over? That’s tough to say. Apple has promised to provide its customers with free bumper cases. It has also encouraged people who are not satisfied with their phone to return it for a full refund. That still means Apple has danced its way around the design problem that iPhone suffers from. As expected, Apple competitors came out firing after the company claimed that other phones suffer from the issue. Samsung and HTC are certainly not happy.
Here is what HTC had to say:
Apple should face its own problems. The reception problems are certainly not common among smartphones they apparently didnt give operators enough time to test the phone.
RIM and Motorola have not been happy with Apple’s claims either. These companies can expect people to test their devices more carefully to find out if they suffer from antenna problems too. Apple may have not taken full responsibility for iPhone 4 issues, but it has managed to change the conversation and put the heat back on its competitors.
In the meantime, antennagate has given many material to mock Apple and AT&T. David Letterman has already done his piece on this issue. But that does not come close to the viral Taiwanese video about this issue:
Apple will bounce back from this as long as there are no other major issues with iPhone 4 (which we don’t expect). Let’s hope the lesson is learned.
