As we all wait for Apple to launch iPhone 5, some sources are reporting that the company may be planning to refresh iPhone 4 as well. According two unknown sources with “knowledge of that matter,” an unnamed Korean manufacturer has started manufacturing parts for a cheaper 8 GB version of iPhone 4. This new iPhone 4 is slated to show up in a matter of weeks.
Releasing cheaper iPhones is expected to be a part of Apple’s strategy to dominate the smart-phone business in the future. No matter how great Apple’s products are, some people would love nothing more than to get their hands on cheaper versions of them.
Apple may want to push into the emerging market segment where customers want to switch to low- to mid-end smartphones from high-end feature phones, which usually cost $150-200,
said Yuanta Securities analyst Bonnie Chang to Reuters. It is not clear whether Apple will put up the 8 GB iPhone 4 for under $200 at this point. But it does seem the company’s next phone will be a dual mode one. Apple has had to produce two different versions of iPhone, one for AT&T and one for Verizon. A dual mode iPhone 5 with support for both CDMA, and GSM seems logical.
As TechCrunch has reported, a developer of some popular iOS apps has discovered the use of iPhone 5 in app logs. Apparently, a few people are already testing the dual-mode iPhone 5 as their network codes suggest. At this point, this is just a rumor. We have heard so many stories about what iPhone 5 will and won’t offer. We will have to wait to see which ones turn out to be true.
