Apple makes great smart-phones and tablets. But the company has ways to go to make the cameras included in its products to catch up with their hype. To be fair, Apple has improved iPhone’s camera significantly already. iPad 2’s camera just does not meet the high standards Apple has set for itself. If the recent rumors are true, Apple will be offering a much more powerful camera in iPhone 5. According to the Wall Street Journal, Sony CEO Howard Stringer has let the cat out of the bag on iPhone 5’s camera:
It always puzzles me… Why would I make Apple the best camera?
Apparently, Sony will be replacing OmniVision to provide Apple higher quality cameras. Interestingly enough, Sony’s factories have been damaged badly during the recent events in Japan. Can Apple ship iPhone 5 in time with its partner having difficulty supplying it with cameras for the device?
iPhone 5 is not the only Apple product that will be getting a better camera. A new rumor suggests that iPod Nano will be getting a camera too (without a major change in its design form). The features of this camera are not known at this point.
The rise of Android should encourage Apple to innovate even more to stay ahead of the pack. Even though many experts claim Android will be the #1 mobile platform, Apple has a lot of momentum behind the iOS platform. Fierce competition can only bring the best out of Apple. Let’s hope iPad 3 also gets a much better camera.
