iPhone 3.0 Gets More Storage

When you think about it, it wasn’t that surprising. After all, iPhone 3.0 allows you to record videos and store them on your iPhone. Videos are not exactly helpful if you are trying to save space on your memory. So Apple’s buying up large quantities of flash memory can mean only one thing. Apple understands that you can’t get away with 8 or 16 GB storage if you want to take a lot of video on your phone. Even without video, a lot of folks are struggling to not go over their existing memory space. That could explain why it has bought over 100 million NAND flash chips.
But there is another side to this story. What we have seen so far from Apple is doubling up its productions. One could assume that since Apple is planning two different sets of iPhones, they need to double up their production material. I doubt this explains the flash chips, but it’s interesting to see how Apple approach this. Will it introduce symmetrical product lines or will it save 32 GB iPhone for the U.S.? That’s something worth getting excited about.

32 GB should be fine depending on how people use it. My take would be to use it for quick bursts of clips (not to go beyond 5 mins or so each as a rule of thumb) and then pull the video off as quickly as possible onto something else – such as my Macbook, a USB drive, or etc. It’s doable – I don’t think Apple would add video in the hopes of creating HD movies or anything, but for live on-the-scene coverage/blogging it would be a handy feature to have.
