We all know that you are not supposed to look at an eclipse directly without protective eyewear. That also applies to your camera. There have been a lot of discussions about whether your smartphone camera can be damaged if you point it at the sun. Most smartphone camera lenses are small, so they do not allow in enough light. They also have UV filters. Newer models with faster and larger lenses could be problematic though.
With a decent smartphone solar filter, you don’t have to guess. Take the SafeShot for instance: it is a handy tool that lets you capture solar events with your smartphone while looking at the sun directly with your eyes. It has two windows, one for your phone and the other for your eyes. You don’t need a special app to use this with your camera. SafeShot is made of recycled materials. It meets the ISO standard 12312-2-2015.
