Magellan Premium GPS Car Kit: Turn Your iPod Into a GPS
0Last week, we had a chance to get a glimpse of Magellan’s GPS application for iPhone. Magellan is yet another GPS maker that has decided to get its feet wet in the mobile GPS market. But unlike many other GPS manufacturers that have decided to develop an app only for iPhone, Magellan is targeting iPod Touch owners as well. Magellan Premium GPS Car Kit, which is expected to ship on December 11th, is a mount for iPhone and iPod Touch that not only makes navigating on the road more convenient but it also enables GPS functionality on your iPod Touch. So you can start navigating with your Magellan GPS app on your iPod Touch as well without having to upgrade your device.
This premium GPS kit also provides a boost for your iPhone GPS as well. It’s also a charger for your iPhone, so you can keep your iPhone charged and navigate at the same time. You got to love the noise cancelling speaker phone and the amplified speaker that is included in this kit.
We still have not managed to get our hands on a test unit to confirm some of the claims that Magellan has made, but apparently this kit will work with any navigation app. The kit is not cheap by any means. The app + kit will cost you around $200, which is almost as much you would have to pay to get your hands on a traditional GPS unit. The kit does promise to enable iPod Touch users to use navigation apps on their device. It won’t turn your iPod Touch into an iPhone, but it does give you some options. The bad news is that it’s pricey. Besides, why would anyone want to pay for a GPS app when Google Maps Navigation can be had for free. Let’s hope Apple will allow Google to bring that app to iPhone platform.
